Weitere Highlights auf dieser tollen Scheibe sind „Halfway around the World“, der charmante Groover „Forgot to make her mine“, das schöne „Tatiana“ und das –möglicherweise Hardrockigste Lied „Rock you all night long“.

As these opening lines pierce through your head, you can rest assured that they'll make their home there for many years to come. Between the high-pitched dynamics of vocalist Frank Dimino, and the ivory tickling expertise of keyboardist extraordinaire Gregg Giuffria, this is one classic album that has sadly been forgotten about.

Coming up to prominence in 1975 with their self-titled debut, Angel was a new sensation that was poised to follow in the footsteps of Casablanca Records labelmates, Kiss. Placing well on reader opinion polls in rock rags like Circus and Hit Parader was common practice for Angel when this, their second release, appeared on shelves. Winning Best New Group, and Gregg Giuffria dominating the Best Keyboardist polls, started to become a given. So, what happened? Why doesn't Angel music live on in the classic rock genre today? These are questions that will always remain a mystery. Angel went on to make 5 studio records in the 70's; the first three, chock full of hearty songs with great musicianship and charisma, and the last two records were nothing short of abysmal. Why the decline in quality for the last two records? Another mystery. Angel did go on to cut a live record in that time also, entitled "Live Without A Net", but this second record was their finest moment.

"Feelin' Right" is the straight forward rocker that kicks off the record; and it's a song that utilizes the simple classic rock formula, while incorporating a sharp and resounding vocal track to do the driving. The swirling artistry of Giuffria's keyboards was really what Angel's existence was based on though. Even on a simple straight forward rocker like this opening track, Giuffria's presence is a constant. If it's not trading licks with guitarist Punky Meadows on "Feelin' Right", it's mesmerizing us with a four minute intro on "The Fortune". Every song contains a large dose of over-the-top keyboards from an amazing player. Speaking of "The Fortune".....it just happens to be the second track on the lp. A personal favorite of mine, "The Fortune" is a progressive masterpiece. A song that transmits emotion at every twist and turn. An ominous keyboard intro leads to a delicate acoustic guitar and voice moment, which ultimately culminates in a menacing jam where we hear from every member of the band. As the album progresses, we see the classic verse-chorus-verse formula put into dramatic effect. With songs like "Anyway You Want It", "Mirrors", and "Chicken Soup" Angel utilizes every element at their disposal to make simple classic rock songs sound like something special. The spark in these songs is usually Giuffria's keys, and when it's not..... you can count on Dimino's vocals to keep you entranced. The combination of these two entities is best heard on the eloquent ballad "Feelings". A soaring and passionate joining of a tremendous vocal effort, underscored by a classical inspired piano piece. Still, in my opinion, one of the most emotional and beautiful rock ballads ever.

All of this talk about the singer and keyboard player leads one to believe that the band may be in need of a decent guitar player, right? Nah. Guitarist Punky Meadows leaves his mark on these songs also. Tracks such as "Angel Theme", which is for the most part a guitar solo, "Dr. Ice" and "Feelings" all contain excellent guitar parts. This is a rare case of a very good guitar player, sharing time with a literal genius on keyboards. Angel made this situation work unlike anyone else. And, finally, let's mention the rhythm section of drummer Barry Brandt and bassist Mickey Jones. Putting a solid backbone on all these tracks we lose sight of their important role here. With so much going on in front of them, they need to lay a thick foundation for all of these other elements to stand upon, and they do exactly that. Bassist Jones stays simple and steady, while Brandt bangs the skins with an intensity that stays consistent and solid. This record was an all around effort by a band that had reached their peak. Van Halen - The album "1984" made the band into mainstream. I remember when I listened to that songs that climbed up the chart with amazing leap. Girls danced when they heard the song. It marked their dynamic music shift from previous guitar featured rock to Synth featured rock but this one still retains good-ol' rockin' style as shown in TOP JIMMY and HOT FOR TEACHER.

PANAMA is still one of my #1 favorite Van Halen song. Guitar solo of I'LL WAIT still rings in my ears. Two styles clash. Everyone knows the classic "Jump", which was number 1 on the pop charts for 5 weeks. Clearly the use of synthesizer in that song--including along with Eddie's guitar solo--showed that this was something a little different from past VH efforts. But for sure, it still rocks!
The band opted for Keyboard fetured rock and Dave chose the straight ahead rock the band had been searching. So the eventual breakup was inevitable. Dave became solo and the band survived with the new amazing singer SAMMY HAGAR. Yep another golden years for VAN HALEN has not yet to come.
Overall, despite a brief running time of 33 minutes--and a couple of bumps along the road--"1984" is solid from start to finish. It's a must-buy for any VH fan and any fan of 1980s popular culture.

BBM - Around the next Dream. 1994
There’s two ways of looking at this project, each of which will leave you with varying levels of expectation. Some will look at this band as a "supergroup" containing three blues rock legends and will undoubtedly be expecting something special. On the other hand many will look upon this as Cream without Clapton, which, in all honesty, isn’t a particularly exciting prospect until you consider the talents of his – dare I say – replacement.

BBM:
Jack Bruce – Bass, Vocals, Cello
Ginger Baker – Drums, Percussion, Keyboards, Backing Vocals
Gary Moore – Guitar, Vocals, Keyboards

While Gary Moore hasn’t been around as long as his band mates here, he does have an equally extensive back catalogue, one that has earned him respect among the blues and hard rock community. Few will need an introduction to former Cream members Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker who have both managed to keep themselves busy since the demise of Cream, both releasing a series of solo albums along with various collaborations.
Considering the legendary status of the musicians involved, Around the Next Dream was a relatively low profile release. However upon it’s release, in May 1994, it received mostly positive reviews and peaked at number 9 in the UK Album Chart. The opening track, Waiting in the Wings and following track, City of Gold see all three band members in great form and it is immediately evident that Moore is happy to stick to his own unique guitar style rather than trying to adapt and imitate Clapton’s trademark sound that featured so prominently in the Cream sound of the late 60’s. Jack Bruce is no stranger to working with Moore as he made a brief appearance on Moore’s solo album, Corridors of Power, singing on the track End of the World, he also handle’s vocal duties on a large portion of the tracks here.

Where in the World was released as a single and is one of the most memorable songs on the album, featuring vocals from both Moore and Bruce, the song reached number 57 in the UK Singles Chart. Most of the songs are credited to Moore with contributions from both Bruce and Baker, although the latter only contributed to the writing for two songs, namely Glory Days and the lengthy Why Does Love (Have to Go Wrong). The bluesy High Cost of Loving is one of the album's many highlights, featuring some breathtaking guitar playing from Moore and a strong vocal performance from Jack Bruce, who’s voice sounds in great form throughout. Another album high point is the cover of Albert King’s I Wonder Why (Are You Mean To Me), which precedes the slow melancholic album closer, Wrong Side of Town. There is a strong blues flavour running throughout the album, with several of the songs sounding more like Gary Moore solo tracks than band efforts, particularly Can’t Fool the Blues and the aforementioned Albert King cover, both of which wouldn’t have sounded out of place on either of Moore’s two previous albums. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as Gary Moore was on a career high following the release of the highly acclaimed Still Got the Blues and After Hours albums and his presence helps keep this album from sounding like an attempt from Bruce and Baker at regaining past glories. Despite this, Cream comparisons will inevitably be drawn, particularly in relation to the album’s opening track, Waiting in the Wings, which strongly resembles White Room from Cream’s Wheels of Fire album. But whatever the occasion, when two members of Cream work together, Cream comparisons are unavoidable and fortunately the material on offer here is consistently strong enough for this not to be a problem.

The band toured the UK briefly as well as appearing at a few rock festivals but sadly the band was shortlived and they ended up disbanding later that year. While nothing on this album is likely to reach the heights of Cream's Sunshine of Your Love or even Moore’s own Still Got the Blues, overall it is an excellent album and one that is an essential purchase for any blues rock fan and also a testament to the skills of a truly remarkable guitarist who will be sadly missed.
R.I.P. Gary Moore R.I.P. Jack Bruce

Jimmy Barnes - Freight Train Heart (1987) became a huge hit for Jimmy Barnes, and with good reason. It followed on directly from the blue-collar rock of Bodyswerve and For the Working Class Man, yet managed to create its own identity. While it may have lacked complete originality ('Driving Wheels' is a simple update of 'Working Class Man'), Barnes managed to make this set of songs an instant classic, thanks to the strength of singles like 'Waitin' for the Heartache'. Slightly more polished than For the Working Class Man (but never losing sight of its pub-rock origins), Freight Train Heart nevertheless runs neck and neck with that album for the title of Barnes' best release.

Kansas - Rock of Ages Festival
26.07.14 Seebronn / Germany

Sorry Rock of Ages.

Dire Straits - First (1978)

The ’60s, ’70s and ’80s are full of stories about bands that limped along for years, touring hard and testing their labels’ patience before finally getting their big break. Given their low-key music and resolute lack of visual flash, the guys in Dire Straits seemed like good candidates for one of those slow-building careers — and unlikely candidates for mainstream pop stardom.
Initially, it looked like the band’s self-titled debut, released 35 years ago this month, might be destined for cult status; in spite of a spate of positive reviews, sales for ‘Dire Straits’ didn’t ignite right away — especially in the U.S., where the record’s big single, ‘Sultans of Swing,’ took more than five months to really start taking off. In the meantime, Dire Straits were busy touring across Europe, where audiences greeted them with more immediate enthusiasm, especially in Australia and the U.K. Eventually, record buyers on both sides of the Atlantic caught up with the band, and by the end of 1979, they’d graced the upper reaches of album charts worldwide while sending ‘Sultans’ to the Top 5 in the U.S.
It served as sweet vindication for a group whose pronounced financial poverty helped inspire its tongue-in-cheek name, and particularly for frontman Mark Knopfler, whose pursuit of a career in music took him through a divorce and a lot of late nights slogging through pub gigs while paying the bills as a teacher.

I was wandering all through the country,” recalled Knopfler in a 1979 interview. “Taking all sorts of jobs — working in warehouses and offices — and my musical career was going nowhere. I finally got a job teaching English in a college, which I was delighted to have because it proved to be a real steadying influence. There happened to be guitar classes at the college, and there was a guitar teacher there with whom I used to play. In addition, I also would go out into country schools and teach little kids basic guitar and singing a few times a week.”
Knopfler’s blue-collar existence helped inform the characters in his songs, as well as the band’s lineup. Although he’d been steadily gigging for years, Dire Straits didn’t really begin to coalesce until Knopfler moved into a flat with his brother (and fellow guitarist) David, who was already sharing a place with bassist John Illsley. Once the trio recruited drummer Pick Withers to round out the band in 1977, they were off and running, recording a five-song demo in early 1978 and managing to get the tape — which included ‘Sultans of Swing’  – into the hands of influential BBC disc jockey Charlie Gillett, whose early support helped spark the interest of the group’s U.K. label, Phonograph Records.
In retrospect, it’s easy to hear what attracted Gillett and Phonograph execs to Dire Straits, but it’s also important to acknowledge that the band’s sound was entirely out of step with everything else that was going on in rock during the late ’70s. Though Knopfler’s distinctive lead guitar was often the focal point of the music, his playing resisted big hooks and flashy solos, and Muff Winwood’s clean production on ‘Dire Straits’ was the antithesis of the rawer, heavier sound that was popular with a lot of younger acts. Neither punk nor disco, glam nor metal, ‘Dire Straits’ existed in a part of the musical landscape all its own.
Ultimately, that’s a big part of what made Dire Straits such a draw for its widening circle of fans, and helped turn the band into one of the more unlikely arena-filling rock groups of the ’80s and early ’90s. But even at their biggest, their music never lost its quiet, contemplative heart — one that listeners heard loud and clear on ‘Dire Straits,’ and which hasn’t lost any of its power.

Steve Miller Band "Book of Dreams" is the tenth studio album by Steve Miller Band. It was released is May of 1977 and have since gone triple platinum. It was released to favorable reviews, and rightfully so. It features some of the songs the band are best known for.

1. "Threshold" - The album starts out with a spacey introduction. It is very well orchestrated and transcends perfectly into the next track.

 2. "Jet Airliner" - Many know this song. It's an awesome rocker that really stands out as one of the highlight songs from the band. The instrumentation is fairly simplistic, but it just works so well. The vocals are outstanding as well. It’s really hard to listen to this song without tapping your foot.

3. “Winter Time” - Another great tune. It starts off by sending some wind noises and acoustic guitar to capture the winter feel. Then in come a harmonica and the rest of the instruments. The whole song has a great rhythm. This is an absolutely beautiful song from start to finish.

4. “Swingtown” - Many will know this song as well, especially those that have watched the show of the same name. The awesome introduction from the drums and bass lets the listener know immediately that they’re in for a fun, upbeat song. All in all it’s a great tune that flows really well.

5. “True Fine Love” – This song also has a nice rhythm. This isn’t quite my favorite, but it still is a nice little tune with good vocal work. The lyrics talk of one searching for love, and many can connect with that.

6. “Wish upon a Star” – This starts out with another spacey introduction, with the vocals mixing in. It really takes you to another place when you listen to it. The singing is phenomenal! While definitely different, this song is just awesome.

7. “Jungle Love” – One of the best Steve Miller Tune’s ever. How could you not love this song? It is done so well, it makes me want to get up and dance, and I don’t dance. The band manages to get perfection without being over complex, and I love it.

8. “Electro Lux Imbroglio” – Try saying that five times fast. This is a quick spacey intermission of sorts, getting ready for the next song. Not really much to say, besides it is kind of eery.

9. “Sacrifice” – Thankfully it transcends perfectly into this song. It really captures the Steve Miller sound. The song is done very nicely (A recurring theme of the album), and stands out all its own as a nice, mellow track. Also the guitar work is noteworthy for being very well done.

10. “The Stake” – The early part of this song reminds me of Rocky Mountain Way. It is well done, with guitar and vocals trading off for each other. It just has a certain cool factor to it. This is a well done song with nice instrumentation.

11. “My Own Space” – The song starts off with a Boston-esque sound to it. This is a very soft, laid back song with good singing. Not much to say other than that.

12. “Babes in the Wood” – And yet again the sound changes in this song. The acoustic guitar is just awesome here. It is really folkish in a way. It sounds like the music you hear in a pub in an old fantasy movie. The instruments carry the song well, and they must for it is an instrumental. It is a nice, if strange, way to finish off the album.

This album explores many different sounds but still manages to capture the Steve Miller feel. This is an album I feel must be experienced start to finish. It has no filler songs. This may be due to my love of Steve Miller Band. Wertung:******(6) Steve Miller Band und Steve Miller Band Facebook
