Billy Powell, the only keyboardist Lynyrd Skynyrd ever had, died last night at his home near Jacksonville, Florida. He was 56. No cause of death has been announced, and a post on the official Skynyrd Website reads, “A Great Loss — Beloved Pianist for the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, Billy Powell, passed away last night. We will post more info shortly. The family and band request your respect and understanding during this difficult time. Thank you.” The band is canceling upcoming shows and directing fans to its Website for tour updates.

Powell first joined Skynyrd in 1973 after serving as the band’s roadie for a year. His keyboard work features prominently on the band’s debut (pronounced ‘leh-’nerd ’skin-’nerd), with Powell credited for crafting the intro for their epic anthem “Free Bird” (Number 191 on Rolling Stone’s Greatest Songs of All Time). After impressing Ronnie Van Zant with his work on the song, Powell was officially invited to join the band, and remained a member from their debut album until 1977’s Street Survivors.

Powell survived the 1977 plane crash that took the lives of singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines and other crew members. Despite suffering injuries including facial lacerations and nearly losing his nose, Powell was the first to be discharged from the hospital and was the only member to attend his bandmates’ funerals. After Skynyrd, Powell joined the Christian rock band Vision, but reunited with Skynyrd after a decade-long hiatus for some concerts in 1989, and ultimately remained with the band until now. In May, Skynyrd played their first-ever gig at New York’s Madison Square Garden with Kid Rock.

Powell and the rest of his Lynyrd Skynyrd bandmates were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. With Powell’s death, guitarist Gary Rossington becomes the lone surviving original Skynyrd member touring with the band.

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – 20 August 2008 – “Shadowman” is the second solo album from Steve Walsh and was originally released in 2005 but without the benefit of a good distribution channel. A couple years later, Steve recorded two new songs with basically the same people but they were only available digitally. Now Steve has teamed up with ProgRock Records to re-release Shadowman and include these 2 new songs as well for a new package that will be widely available.

Steve had this to say: " I'm concluding my writing career with Shadowman and the two tracks I recorded a year or two later, which are also included. It's ironic that I finally found a group of individuals that best represent my songs, at the twilight. Better late than never, I guess. I only wish I had more to record with them. It was fun. I learned that the destination is only as worthwhile as the trip you are willing to take. And that the trip is always a toss up. But this trip was way cool. My only regret is that we weren't able to record in the same room at the same time. It's hard to put into words what writing these songs meant to me. I don't think I was born to do it. But over time I was able to feel things that I blocked out for many years, hell maybe I never felt them before at all. And from time to time I listen to them, as well as Glossolalia with a bit of melancholy, remembering the whole process, and all the memories of excitement whenever I'd get tracks from the guys to add to my sequences. There's not much I can add to what I've already said, except to thank those responsible once again. Joe from Twisted Sister on drums, and Joel from Collective Soul on bass and guitar, and Shawn-who mixed Shadowman. I haven't had the opportunity to say anything about him yet but Jim did a great job on mixing the bonus tracks, and Dave from Kansas on violin topped it off. I’m grateful to Shawn Gordon and ProgRock Records for giving Shadowman and the new tracks an opportunity to be more widely heard and available.".

“Wow, what can I say, Kansas was the first rock band that I liked, they were the soundtrack to my early high school years, getting to work with Steve is just an amazing opportunity and delight for me.”, said Shawn Gordon, President of ProgRock Records.

”Shadowman” is the ProgRock Records debut release from Steve Walsh and can be found at http://www.progrockrecords.com/artists/view.php?id=103. The album will be released in early September 2008 and is available for immediate pre-sale with a $2 discount extending through the pre-sale period. It will be available at your favorite brick and mortar retailer on November 4, 2008.

Monsters of Rock, Zeppelinfield, Nürnberg, Germany Date: 4/9/1983

Phil Lynott in absoluter Bestform. Die Bilder stammen alle vom Auftritt in München.

New !!
Danger Radio - Used and Abused

Lucky enough I didn't sum the musicyear 2008 too early cuz there are a few albums that have come to my mind lately that will enter the top 20, and here is one of them. And when it comes to this one we're talking high up on the list. Danger Radio plays a fantastic sort of groovy, joyfilled modern pop with influences of everything. Spymob, It Bites, Maroon 5, old westcoast, soft modern rock, Nuclear Valdez and hell know whatelse... The answer of this weird combionation of styles is the mix of nationalities in the band...Puerto Rico native Andrew de Torres (vocals) and Finland native Nico Hartikainen (drums, programming) met in 1999 while attending middle school in Everett, Washington, a city located just north of Seattle. And what I also know is that it is a fantastic mix and this years best song is on this album. It's called "One More Chance" and well... take a listen yourself. The coolest CD of the year.

Eagles: Long Road Out Of Eden World Tour 2009

Foreigner

Im Programm haben Foreigner ein großes Paket an Welthits: Von "Feels Like The First Time", "Cold As Ice", "Hot Blooded" über "Double Vision", "Jukebox Hero" bis "Waiting For A Girl Like You", "I Want To Know What Love Is" und "Urgent".

New!
Bulletproof Messenger - Arm Yourself ****
Wow! No, not World of Warcraft, I mean WOW in a good way. BulletProof Messenger is a new discovery for me although this is their second release. I got this album sent to me a while ago and I have been listening to it non-stop ever since. The band plays their music in the vein of Breaking Benjamin and Trust Company, so this is tough rock with effects and tons of edge. Boy, do these guys know how to lay down cool riffs because this album is packed with them!

The album starts off with This Fantasy, a song with a nice intro with some cool scratching that adds an extra dimension too it. This is a very cool track! Second out is the song Move On, also packed with cool riffs and a great chorus, one of the best songs on the album. Third out, Lose it All has a pumping bass line and another killer chorus, they just keep coming! DLD is an instrumental track that leads into the title track Arm Yourself. Now we are talking a quality song. Heavy riffing, chugging bass line and pounding drums all blended into a truly great song. Almost as good is the song Control that follows straight after. This part of the album has got me nodding my head with a big grin on my face, me like a lot!

As if that was not enough, No Way Out is another great song. Wasted brings out the acoustic guitar for the first time and Where We Belong stars with a beautiful piano intro. This is the closest to a ballad as we get so far on this album as it is piano-led with strings during the verses. I get some serious Skillet-vibes from this song and that is not a bad thing. Grand Disaster is a huge song that reminds me a bit of Fightstar, again, not a bad reference. Closing song Step Out is a song that sounds different compared to the others as it takes almost four minutes before the heavy guitars come in and it has a bluesy feel too it for the most part.

Overall this is a great album, a high variety of tracks combined with brilliant songs and a great production. BulletProof Messenger is a really tight band with great musicians all the way. The year 2008 might be over but this already sets the bar quite high for 2009. I think this is better than Breaking Benjamin as this is more varied than BB’s latest effort. I have high hopes for these guys, they are going to be really big if there is any justice in the world. If you are a fan of previously mentioned bands you know the drill: Get this now!!

A tremendous start to 2009!
