Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell.

Milestone:******(6)

Mit dem Single-Hit „On The Loose" beginnt das Album Saga-typisch druckvoll, also ohne langes Intros. Mit dem ebenfalls recht bekannten „Time's Up"(und seiner markanten E-Gitarre) folgt eine ruhigere, fantasy-artige Nummer. Mit „Wind Him Up" folgt ein weiterer Single-Hit.

In the history of the band Saga, this album must rank as the best representation of what the band is about. Their fourth album, it comes after three very progressive albums, and is sort of at the crossroads with the albums that would follow it. It has a more modern and powerful production than the first three albums, but still contains elements of the earliest progressive sound. The popularity of songs On the Loose and Wind Him Up brought name recognition in the US. The songs are great. All of them. While Hine helped add a little pop sensibility, there's still just awesome art-rock music here. Perhaps the album is now a little dated, the songs and music on it are still top notch, and a great intro to anyone interested in the band, or if it's missing from your Saga collection. I played it for the first time in a while the other day, and 28 years after it's release, it's still a fantastic listen. Milestone(******)

Kansas - Leftoverture/1976

2. The Wall 4.47
3. What´s On My Mind 3.27

Gary Moore - Back on the Streets is an album by Irish guitarist Gary Moore, released in 1979. It's his first album as a solo artist, because he recorded the Grinding Stone album as The Gary Moore Band. Thin Lizzy bassist/vocalist Phil Lynott and drummer Brian Downey appear on 4 songs of the album, including UK Top 10 single "Parisienne Walkways".

Back On The Streets does display some weak spots, of course. Gary recorded it rather hurriedly, at about the very same time that he was serving his brief stint in Thin Lizzy and helped Phil Lynott record Black Rose; in return, Phil agreed to help Gary on his own solo record and even contributed some songs, some lead vocals and some bass playing.
'Parisienne Walkways', and there's also 'Song For Donna', which, while slightly less generic and featuring some breathtaking arpeggios on the verses, essentially sounds like a very skimpy parody on classic period Stevie Wonder. Except it forgets to add anything vaguely resembling a hook, and the vocals are downright pathetic. One might also question the validity of Gary and Phil's "slow" re-recording of the Thin Lizzy classic 'Don't Believe A Word' - the bassline, borrowed from 'Born Under A Bad Sign', definitely rules, but the fast, bleeding original was so much better and so much more grippin' that it's even hard to begin to compare. Once you distance yourself from the original, though, the revamped version is hardly bad at all, particularly in the 'duetting' department. And they do push up the tempo eventually, so the coda at least does remind you of the power this song once had.

But, of course, it's the fast numbers that make the record. In fact, it's almost amazing when I take one more look at the overall quality of the album - how these lame shits-of-taste peacefully coinhabit the environment of such otherwise accomplished and venerable hard rock compositions. Because the other two songs on the record are ferocious rockers, true Gary Moore classics - the title track just kicks all kinds of ass all over the place. Mayhaps it doesn't have a particularly memorable/unique riff, but it's all compensated by the energy; in fact, that's the main trick here, as even the lesser tunes are often salvaged by Gary simply jumping out of himself to prove his talents and worth. 'Back On The Streets' milks the 'rebel vibe' for all its worth, runs along at a frenetic pace, and from the very start establishes Mr Moore as one of the most amazing shredders in the business (not to mention one of the first ones). Funny that there's nothing even remotely close to that technique on his only Thin Lizzy album, Black Rose - maybe Lynott did not want Gary to exploit his full potential because it would overshadow the rest of the band.
The second number is the Lynott-penned 'Fanatical Fascists', with some of Phil's most complex and ambivalent lyrics - is the song really about neo-Nazism or it's just a standard anti-capitalist rant? Lord only knows, in case he didn't forget to ask Phil about it. Cool energetic rocker with not much soloing power, but with plenty of drive and mind-boggling riffage. I'd actually like to see it recorded by Thin Lizzy in their Gorham/Robertson days, though, there's plenty of space for these two guys to practice their imagination in the song.

The rest of the record is dedicated to instrumentals most of which are in the fusion vein - reflecting Gary's past musical experiences, mainly his work with Colosseum II. This is usually called the weak link on the album, but I disagree. As much as I'm not a fusion fan and even find a lot of Jeff Beck's mid-Seventies musings pointless and boring (though not all of them), this record shows the real potential of fusion. And that potential? Why, to getcha rockin' all over, of course! It's all technically perfect, but it's also mighty powerful music - not just 'experimental' and not just 'mood-setting', but it's real cool fusion that's intelligent on one hand and rip-roaring, on the other hand. The seven-minute piece 'Flight Of The Snow Moose' (hey, subtle attack on Camel, eh?) never bores me at all, and neither do the other two. You just need to turn your amps REAL LOUD and let yourself get carried away. It helps if you're a prolific air guitar player. Plus, 'Hurricane' runs faster than a freight train, and 'What Would You Rather Bee Wasp' has got a TON of tremendous musical ideas - riffs, great synth lines, you name it. Power, speed, and memorability - if all avantgarde jazz/jazz-rock kept remembering these three pillars of quality, I'd be ready to die a happy man.

Ein Album zwischen Jazz Blues und Thin Lizzy Rock. Ich war beim ersten hören sofort begeistert. Hier zeigt Gary Moore was er drauf hat. Wieselflinke Killer Solos, Jazz/Fusion vom feinsten. Milestone:******(6)

Rick Springfield - Living in Oz(1983)
"Heart in my mouth, pulse in my head, mercury rising into the red, the smell of the skin can light up all the fires in me," is the first line in the extended version of "Affair of the Heart." This guitar-driven song previews what to expect throughout the entire album. "Living In Oz," the third Springfield installment of the 1980s is a thoughtful, intelligently written, guitar-driven ensemble which demands the respect that Mr. Springfield had been searching for previously. The dancebeat "Human Touch" is funky, but touches on loneliness: "I'm so scared and isolated in the modern world." "Living In Oz," catches the listener with the hard-edge shrilling guitar introduction, and keeps the listener with its emotional lyrics which border on cynnicism:

1 Human Touch 5:07
2 Alyson 3:48
3 Affair of the Heart 4:33

4 Living in Oz 3:48
5 Me & Johnny 4:25
6 Motel Eyes 3:13
7 Tiger by the Tail 3:28
8 Souls 4:18
9 I Can't Stop Hurting You 3:42

"Everybody's got to fight their demons, and you know I had to fight mine too; it took alot outta me, it took a lot outta you to be living in oz." This song wreaks of emotion both in lyrics and in the strength of the guitar. Every track is worth a listen. "Souls" is a guitar-powered ballad. "Motel Eyes" is hard-core lyrics, hard-core guitar. The final piece on the album "Like Father, Like Son," is a classical tribute to Rick's lost father. The album is at the top of my list of Best Rick Albums. Check this album out. It is awesome.

Magnum - Storyteller`s Night. As much as I love Magnum's 1983 album The Eleventh Hour, their 1985 follow up On a Storyteller's Night is even better. It is, in fact, their strongest overall album and the one release that best represents what the Magnum sound is all about. That sound, which is typically described as "pomp rock" has elements of Deep Purple and Rainbow to Uriah Heep and Genesis, as well as arena rock bands like Styx, Boston, and REO Speedwagon. Magnum's music is dramatic and bombastic, and highly melodic as well.On a Storyteller's Night is not only a perfect example of Magnum's sound, it's also an example of what was possible in an era when the lines between rock, metal, and AOR weren't as defined as they are today. The album is heavy to the point of metallic at times, shifting abruptly to melancholy ballads and then to a keyboard-driven arena rock anthem and back again.

I'd recommend this album to just about anyone who enjoys classic rock. Magnum is a tragically overlooked band, and once you hear them, you're hooked. On a Storyteller's Night is a great album to start with, as it really represents what Magnum was all about. There really isn't a weak moment on the entire album, but songs like Les Morts Dansant, All England's Eyes, the title track and especially Just Like an Arrow are among the band's absolute best material.

Somewhere To Elsewhere, Kansas' thirteenth studio album, originated when the material the bands former guitarist and keyboardist Kerry Livgren was working on for a solo album began to remind him of the classic Kansas sound. Livgren, as a result, got in touch with drummer Phil Ehart and recommended that he listen to the material in question in addition to suggesting that perhaps they could record in the future as well. Ehart and guitarist Rich Williams proceeded to visit Livgren at his studio in Topeka and agreed that the new songs did in fact bring to mind Kansas. Subsequently, all six original members of Kansas worked together for the first time since the bands 1980 release Audio-Visions. Returning to the fold are Livgren, Ehart and Williams joining bassist Dave Hope, violinist/vocalist Robby Steinhardt and lead vocalist Steve Walsh. Billy Greer, who has been with the band for fifteen years via Walsh's post-Kansas group streets, helps out on bass and lead vocals.

What we have in Somewhere To Elsewhere is an inspired work of progressive rock in which Kansas returns to its classic sound of the 70's, the album attaining a level of excellence found on the bands most noteworthy efforts such as Leftoverture and Point Of Know Return. Walsh's raspy classic rock flavored voice still sounds as strong and robust as ever. The precise drumming of Ehart combines with the steady bass lines of Hope and Greer to form a solid rhythm section. Livgren remains at the top of his game on keyboards and forms an underrated guitar team with Williams. Steinhardt continues to effectively accentuate the bands sound on violin in addition to helping out in the lead vocal department.

With immaculate and big budget-like production values, Somewhere To Elsewhere literally breathes life in allowing each member of the band to rise above the instrumentation.

After "Icarus II" gets underway in classic Kansas style to a combination of piano and acoustic guitar backed by Steinhardt's violin, it briefly picks up in pace only to slow to a piano for its first verse. The rhythm guitar taking over at the start of the second leads the way to a strong melodic flavored chorus before moving to the front of the mix to help drive an instrumental passage carried by a blistering guitar solo.

The crisp rhythm guitar at the start of "When The World Was Young" takes a backseat in the mix as it moves forward in an acoustic laced manner, a combination of piano and vocal harmonies underscoring the song as it gains momentum for a catchy hook filled chorus. The lead guitar and violin interplay taking place during a minute long instrumental passage is nothing less than textbook Kansas. "When The World Was Young" talks about how the choices we make when we're young have a lasting impact on our lives

Steinhardt's gritty lead vocal style perfectly suits the funky blues based hard rocker "Grand Fun Alley". Subsequent to a laid back and bluesy guitar line buttressing the song during its verse, an edgy rhythm guitar kicks in and brings out the best in a stately chorus reinforced by just the right amount of vocal harmonies. A keyboard solo opens an instrumental passage highlighting several seconds of blues based lead guitar work underscored by a punchy bass line.

The beautiful keyboard based ballad "The Coming Dawn (Thanatopsis)" gives Walsh the opportunity to shine with his abundant classic rock flavored voice. Subsequent to a piano slowly propelling the song through its first verse and chorus, an acoustic guitar enters the mix and leads the way to its second chorus in a sweeping and majestic flavored fashion. Steinhardt's violin perfectly blends with the acoustic guitar throughout a nice extended instrumental passage. Livgren's words convey great depth and meaning:

Introduced to a combination of piano and lead guitar, the epic length (8:54) "Myriad" picks up in pace when the rhythm section enters the mix and helps carry the song through its first two minutes. Once "Myriad" slows to a piano upon reaching its first verse, the rhythm guitar steps forward at the start of second and takes it to a chorus projecting an expansive and upbeat feel. An eclectic mix of keyboards and organ opens a three minute instrumental passage allowing the band to display its first rate musicianship.

Greer takes over on lead vocals on the stylish "Look At The Time". The combination of piano and keyboards at the beginning of "Look At The Time" transitions to a crisp sounding rhythm guitar, a touch of vocal harmonies underlining the song during its first verse and the brief but smooth sounding chorus that follows. An organ enters the mix at the start of an instrumental passage carried by a portentous mix of orchestration and keyboards.

"Disappearing Skin Tight Blues" gives Steinhardt the opportunity to display his abilities in the areas of both lead vocals and violin. Opening to a combination of violin and piano, the song abruptly picks up in pace when a blues flavored rhythm guitar enters the mix in time to carry its first verse. Slowly gaining momentum, "Disappearing Skin Tight Blues" advances to a moving sing-along chorus driven by upbeat vocal harmonies. A minute long instrumental passage blends a mix of orchestration and keyboards with a bit of lead guitar.

The grand piano commencing the awesome "Distant Vision" is soon joined by the violin, a blend of organ and rhythm and acoustic guitar conveying the song over its first two minutes as it picks up in pace. A crunchy rhythm guitar proceeds to take "Distant Vision" through its first verse until it peaks for a chorus immaculately punctuated by an acoustic guitar. Following an extensive instrumental passage driven by a near perfect mix of rhythm guitar, piano and keyboards, the pace slows to an acoustic guitar as Steinhardt great lead vocals.

Grand Fun Alley
The Coming Dawn

Look At The Time
Disappearing Skin Tight Blues
  Distant Vision
Byzantium
Not Man Big

Ominous medieval style vocal harmonies underscore the sublime "Byzantium" from the start, an acoustic guitar holding sway over the songs first two verses before it picks up in pace for a touching chorus bolstered by an exquisite blend of acoustic guitar and orchestration. The medieval vocal harmonies return to carry "Byzantium" over its last thirty seconds. Beautiful song.

The upbeat hard rocker "Not Man Big" slowly fades in until a swiftly moving rhythm guitar quickly takes it to a hard hitting chorus bolstered by heavy gang style background vocals. After several seconds of spicy lead guitar gives way to a tastefully done keyboard solo, a hard rocking rhythm guitar closes out an exciting two minute instrumental passage. I like how the song ends as the gang style backing vocals return and are carried over a blend of clapping hands, piano, organ and a bit of lead guitar.

Somewhere To Elsewhere proves a awesome reunion album giving prominence to Kansas' still vibrant progressive rock sound, a top notch production job and Livgren's inspired songwriting. As a result, ..a milestone and rank it among the top progressive rock releases of 2000.

Burntfield - Cold Heat juxtaposes 4 diverse songs that comprise all of Burntfield’s core qualities: 3 vocalists, 2 guitars, strong melodies and multi-part vocal harmonies with an organic approach.

Cold Heat is all about contrasts; the diverse musical content provides a solid platform, upon which temperatures, colours and moods get mixed. A blend of hefty grooves, deep atmospheres, dynamic progressions and eclectic arrangements stems from the band members’ broad musical spectrum.

Cold Heat was recorded and mixed by the trusted collaborator Eero Kaukomies at Sonic Pump Studios and Content Union Studios, Helsinki. Yet again Arttu Vauhkonen, the keyboard maestro of the melodic metal stars Arion, makes a special guest appearance, cooking juicy keyboard sounds to the mixture. The killing cover art was created by Petri Lampela.

Burntfield started in late 2012. Organic Waves, Burntfield’s first EP was released in November 2013, and in September 2014, the band released an online single Let It Die Away. Towards the end of the year, guitarist-singer Ville Repo decided to step aside from Burntfield, and played his last show with the band in December 2014. A new member was found without delay when guitarist-singer Valtteri Seppänen joined Burntfield, while the story carries on…

Saga - Silent Knight (1980)

Es kommt in einem dramatischen Progrock/Progmetal-Brecher zum Gegengesang von Barbar ("I won't be the one to die here - I was born to go down fighting") und Highlander. Im Refrain stellen alle Charaktere ihre Einheit her ("We're alive, we'll survive) - lediglich der Highlander scheint zu resignieren ("I'm nobody's slave").

Die nächste Hürde: The garden of emotions.

Im Electric Castle angekommen, sehen sich Barbar und Ritter dort den Seelen jener Menschen ausgesetzt, die sie einst niedermetzelten bzw. töteten ("shades of the dead are sliding on the wall, demons dance in the castle hall").

Der Tower of Hope. Herrlich stampfender, elektronisch und proggig verzierter hymnischer Metal beschreibt die Selbsterkenntnis des sich vor der Realität verschließenden Hippie ("I only felt what I wanted to feel") sowie des technikgläbigen Futuremen ("I only saw what I wanted to see"), als die Suchenden die endlos scheinenden Treppen des Tower of Hope erklimmen.
I'm drawn towards the sun, and then we will be one, my soul will melt into the universe"). Einzig Futureman und Römer entlarven diesen Anblick als Illusion ("It's all a lie, you will just die, so don't give in, for we can win"), was in unheilsvollem Riffing der E-Guitar deutlich wird. Was sich nun anschließt ist das mit Abstand geilste, was bislang meine Ohren in Richtung Black Metal zu hören bekamen. Robert Westerholt und George Oosthoek (im Wechselgesang) locken im als Tod mit blackmetal-typischen Grunt-Vocals ("I am the breeze, the bringer of rest and ease, I am the storm, I blow the devil's horn, I am your fate, the guardian at the gate") die Indianerin ins erlösende Verderben.

Einzig der Ritter ("within this armour cold and bright lies a noble heart with the will to fight the pain") erhält sich den Willen, aus dem Labyrinth auszubrechen ("break though the mirror now").

Athena bietet, erkennt der Futureman die Vergewaltigung der Natur und ihrer Gesetze ("Have we become the victims of our science ? Will we abandon all our earthly treasures ?").

We don't understand ... did we pass or did we fail ?").

Strawbs - Hero & Heroine.1974_ After the enormous commercial success of Bursting at the Seams, the musical differences in the band between Cousins and Hudson and Ford became irreconcilable, resulting in fragmentation. Blue Weaver left to become a Bee Gee and Hudson and Ford formed their own, more commercial outfit. Lambert and Cousins recruited a new rhythm section in ex-Stealers Wheel drummer Rod Coombes and respected session bassist Chas Cronk, completing the line up with ex-Renaissance keyboards wizard John Hawken. At first, Cousins had difficulty getting him to play other keyboards than piano, but eventually he warmed to the mellotron, Hammond and moog. This album is characterised by some wonderful, mellotron drenched songs and glorious synth. It’s a sad album, with a theme of love and abandonment. It also marks the final abandonment of their folk influences and emergence as a full blown progressive band. “Hero and Heroine” is a complete album, which flows perfectly from start to finish.
Autumn, a three part track, kicks off the album with the instrumental Heroine’s Theme, a slow, synth/ bass/drum intro, followed by swathes of sweeping mellotron behind a guitar line. It softens into Deep Summers Sleep, with a Cousins lyric lamenting the end of summer, then changes abruptly to a Lambert-fronted epic with a glorious chorus, melodic guitar solo and the curtain of mellotron. Delicious.
Hero and Heroine features Cousins at his most dramatic, with crashing mellotron and epic guitar over a lyric about desertion. It flows into Midnight Sun, a gentle, beautiful song about hopelessness. Out in the Cold is an erotic song about passionate love and loss. Round and Round, with its insistent synthesiser riff, is about suicide and features Cousans and Lambert on top form. Lay a Little Light on Me is about seeking a way out of depression and lamenting the failure of religion to provide answers. Hero’s theme concludes the album with a repetitive, rousing, motif and chorus.
The musicianship is consistently good, the rhythm section blending effortlessly into the background yet underpinning the songs perfectly whilst the three lead instrumentalists work their magic.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon(1973)

Friday Night in San Francisco

Wertung:******(6)

Bandgeschichte
Frontmann, Sänger und Keyboarder Peter Kingsbery gründete die Band im Jahr 1982 in Los Angeles. Obwohl sie in ihrer Heimat weitgehend erfolglos waren, feierten sie in Europa mit den Singles When your heart is weak (1985), dem Duett The promise you made (1986) aus dem Album Cock Robin sowie der Auskopplung Just around the corner aus dem Album „After here through midland“ (1987) große Erfolge.

A. mit Cyndi Lauper.

Im Jahr 2004 sang die Belgierin Kate Ryan den Titel The promise you made.
